Abstract

Background. The present study aimed to review and analyze the available research evidence on the psychological and spiritual consequences of induced abortion and the factors influencing women’s mental health following this experience. Methods. This review study examined national and international research on induced abortion and women’s mental health. Studies addressing psychological outcomes, including depression, anxiety, feelings of guilt, grief, and relief, as well as spiritual consequences and the role of individual, social, cultural, and religious factors in shaping women’s responses following abortion, were reviewed and analyzed.

Results. The reviewed studies showed that women’s responses following induced abortion may range from depression, anxiety, guilt, sadness, and grief to feelings of relief and reduced psychological distress. However, the nature, severity, and persistence of these reactions vary considerably among individuals. Factors such as a history of psychological problems, the level of social support, unintended pregnancy, exposure to violence, social stigma, and cultural and religious beliefs may contribute to the development and severity of psychological outcomes.

Conclusion. The available evidence indicates that the relationship between induced abortion and women’s mental health is complex and multidimensional, and its consequences cannot be adequately understood independently of individual characteristics, social circumstances, and cultural, religious, and spiritual contexts.
